How to Save Energy in Your Home

Appliances might save you time in the kitchen, but they may be large power hogs in your home. In her book "large Green bake book," registered dietitian Jackie Newgent says "greening" your kitchen appliance adopt may reduce skyrocketing winter utility bills and your carbon footprint.

The refrigerator. It's the largest power glutton in most residential kitchens, Newgent says. Always minimize the time that fridge and freezer doors are open. Keep the fridge temperature between 34 and 40 degrees; the freezer should be at zero degrees. Any temperature that's lower will waste power, and anything higher may spoil food.

The dishwasher. Save money by replacing a dishwasher that's older than 1994 with an power-saving one. Scrape off your dishes before washing, and let clean dishes air-dry. Be sure to adopt eco friendly dish washing detergent that is both phosphate- and bleach-free.

The toaster stove. It's not just for toast anymore. Using half the power of conventional stoves, toaster stoves actually help you bake in a more eco-friendly way.

The microwave stove. Microwaves bake faster, they're much more power-efficient than conventional stoves. They adopt more power per minute, but less baking time is required. Look for microwaves that adopt higher wattage to bake full meals, not simply to reheat food.

Getting the best air conditioning system for your home is important. You need to get appropriate and dependable cooling system to be comfortable staying at home or at the office at all times.

For this, you have a couple of option. However, even if the installation of mini duct air conditioner systems is more difficult it is still the favored option compared to ductless mini split systems. That is because the great benefits from using mini duct air conditioner systems surely make it worth all the trouble.

There is a growing concern worldwide with the onset of climate change and global warming, which has causes drastic changes all around the world, and not exactly in a good way. Many have called for a shift particularly in the kind of energy we use and consume, one that is friendlier to the environment, and is renewable as well.

As things stand, we are traditionally dependent on oil and coal, which are basically non-renewable sources of energy, which means they will run out someday. Besides that, they are also relatively expensive and have harmful by products that damage the environment when they are utilized and harnessed to create fuel and energy.

Thus, there arises a real and legitimate need to utilize cleaner, cheaper and renewable sources of energy, and one of those ways is through wind energy.

When it comes to choosing Victorian décor furniture pieces, you have a lot of flexibility. The Victorians incorporated many different styles of furniture into their homes.

"Anything that is Victorian or pre-Victorian works," Figaretti said.

If you prefer to have furniture made during the Victorian era, look for Victorian antiques or Victorian reproduction furniture. But Figaretti warns that those pieces of furniture aren't always exactly comfortable. So make sure you test the furniture before you buy, or choose furniture pieces made today that have similar shapes and styles to Victorian pieces.

Remember that the Victorian period lasted from roughly 1840 until around 1900.

Victorian furniture is meant to be a focal point in a room, with large proportions, sturdy structures and darkly stained, lustrous woods. Because Victorian furniture is influenced by many previous styles, from Rococo to Gothic, the look can be more eclectic than most traditional styles. However, some stylistic commonalities do occur, such as the prevalent cabriole leg, fluted leg, elaborately carved floral ornamentation and upholstery.

Some furniture pieces have come to represent the Victorian era more than others due to their popularity among home owners of the time. Who wouldn't want to come home to the plush comfort of a settee and recline for a minute or two? Victorians often placed these utterly stylishly, perfectly practical couches below stairs or on floor landing. If you want a more asymmetrical look, you can also use a meridienne, a couch that has uneven arms attached by a slanting back. Pair these sofas with deep-buttoned and balloon-back chairs to complete your seating arrangements and keep friends and family in luxurious comfort.

The multi-purpose armoire also deserves its place in a Victorian room, with doors that can hide linens, plates and clothing or showcase some of your favorite items with the doors left open.

Original pieces of furniture from the Victorian times do come up with relative frequency at auctions and estate sales, but these can be extremely expensive. If you want the look without a price to go down in history, give these websites a try. Keep in mind, however, that many Victorian pieces are meant to be investment furniture pieces, and even reproductions aren’t cheap.

Let us discuss on how to decorate your modern home in Victorian style.

   1. The major thing by which you can give your modern home a vintage Victorian style is by first considering the walls and its color tones. You should consider of putting the reds and dark colors and anything with vintage appeal and depending on the particular style many colors either in your wall color or your accessories.

   2. Use antique style wallpaper and border sets on the walls and you can use paint and stenciling also. If you have a tight budget then you can only consider painting your room with the neutral shades and decorate the room with the accents. You can simply texture walls in warm neutrals to eliminate the coldness of white.

   3. The next most important thing is the flooring which can be given a traditional and unique Victorian feel by placing carpets or soft area rugs. Even the genuine antique rugs or reproductions also work best in budgeted plans. Opt for wall-to-wall carpet with an all-over floral pattern but nowadays hardwood floors are considered as they require less maintenance. Small tiles floors are best fit for bathrooms.

Thus modern homes can easily blend with the traditional Victorian style just by coordinating your furniture and decorative accessories.

My 2 cents to save energy

Here are some:

  • On boiler and heat not adjust the temperature too high, 60C are better than 80C.
  • Use fluorescent light bulbs rather than incandescent (traditional), which guarantee the same luminosit and last very long pi.

  • Get off the stairs on foot instead using the lift.
  • Saving gas in the kitchen putting on the lid during cooking pots, using the most possible pressure cookers.
  • Use rationally dishwasher and washing machine only laden; prefer the microwave oven, which consumes half compared to traditional oven.
  • Prefer a shower bath: fill a bathtub requires three times the energy necessary for a shower for six minutes.
